Asmita Dey: From Tripura’s Small Town to Commonwealth Games Glory

Asmita Dey, born on 22 March 2003, is a talented Indian judoka from Tripura who competes in the women’s 48 kg category. Her journey from a small town in Tripura to becoming a Commonwealth Games champion is a remarkable story of hard work, determination, sacrifice and courage.

Asmita was born and brought up in Belonia, South Tripura, in a modest family. Her father, Arjun Dey, worked as a bicycle mechanic, and her family faced financial difficulties. From a young age, Asmita was interested in sports. She initially participated in athletics, including the 800 metres. However, her life took a different direction when she was introduced to judo. She started training under coach Bina Debnath and later joined the Tripura Sports School, where coach Manik Lal Deb helped her develop her skills.

In 2018, Asmita moved to the Sports Authority of India Regional Centre in Bhopal to receive better training and facilities. There, she trained under experienced coach Yashpal Solanki. Her dedication and discipline gradually brought her success at national and international competitions.

Her first major international breakthrough came in 2022, when she won a bronze medal at the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championships in Thailand. This achievement was particularly significant because she became the first judoka from Tripura to win an international medal.

In 2023, Asmita continued to impress. She won gold at the Junior Asian Cup in Macau, establishing herself as one of India’s promising young judokas. She later progressed into senior-level competitions and gained valuable experience against strong international opponents. In 2025, she achieved another important milestone by winning gold at the Casablanca African Open in Morocco.

Her journey was not without personal challenges. In 2025, Asmita suffered the heartbreaking loss of her father after he suffered a brain stroke. Her father had supported her sporting dreams despite the family’s financial struggles. Although his death was a devastating setback, Asmita found the strength to continue training and pursuing her goals.

Her greatest achievement came on 31 July 2026, at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Competing in the women’s 48 kg event, she defeated Heidi Quach of Canada in the final and won the gold medal. With this historic victory, Asmita became the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Asmita Dey’s story is more than a story of sporting success. It is a story of a young woman who rose from humble beginnings, overcame financial and personal difficulties, and achieved something historic for India.
