Nepal–China Border Floods: Over 630 Dead, Nearly 3,000 Missing

Kathmandu, August 29,2026: Severe floods near the Nepal–Tibet border have caused widespread destruction, killing more than 630 people and leaving nearly 3,000 others missing. The disaster has affected several communities, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure. Heavy rainfall and sudden flooding triggered landslides and disrupted transportation and communication networks across the affected areas. Rescue teams are working to locate missing people and provide emergency assistance to survivors, while authorities face major challenges in reaching remote regions. Nepal has appealed for international support to manage the humanitarian crisis and begin reconstruction. Officials estimate that rebuilding damaged infrastructure and restoring essential services could cost between $4 billion and $5 billion. The floods have highlighted the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather and the urgent need for stronger disaster preparedness and climate-resilient infrastructure.
